The Leading Album of the Year: The Artist's Masterpiece Takes the Number One Position.

Initially, this album might appear more like a challenging university challenge than the latest pop project from a musician whose last single featured an international K-pop icon. Split across four different movements and sung in 13 tongues, this is a head-spinning orchestral-influenced opus investigating feminine mystique, religious transcendence, and physical change, often through the prism of various women saints. The dissolution of a love affair—a topic treated with raw honesty on another major 2025 album—is shot upwards here, carried by the constant sound of a full symphony orchestra and input from a Pulitzer-winning composer among a long list of collaborators. Its sheer daring by itself makes the work of other pop stars seem quite laughable.

Rising Above Academic Exercise

The fact that Lux succeeds in transcend dry intellectual chin-stroking feels nothing short of a miracle, with sole praise going to Rosalía. While it's not the first time album to fuse historical sounds with the present, the stakes are far higher on Lux, and the tightrope walk far more pronounced. The element that truly elevates her fourth release, outside of its multilayered melodies, rich compositions, and inherent theatricality, proves to be a core spirit of fun. Much like the iconic artist during her peak, you find a captivating sense to Rosalía's singing which sweeps the listener up in its whirlwind. When she's tearing hearts apart, the listener nevertheless want to be right there for the journey.

A Prime Moment of Exuberance

That exuberant energy shines brightly on a stirring piano-led ballad inspired by Saint Clare. It luxuriates in a sorrowful melancholy over several minutes. Suddenly, everything falls silent, and there's a gleeful giggle followed by a comment before a hilariously exaggerated orchestral crescendo thuds down with comedic impact. The song then segues into the frenetic track featuring racing strings, a powerful choral group, and a cameo appearance from the artist herself.

"The charm of Lux is that the listener rarely quite know—or even wish to predict—what it is going to next."

Nearly each track finishes in a totally distinct point than where it started. One moment examines the transient nature of fame with a delicate orchestration only to disintegrating in electronic cacophony. Elsewhere, a song that recalls her previous trap-infused work begins out dark and sinister, featuring menacing beats, before fluttering traditional handclaps and an angelic chorus arrive to smooth the song's jagged edges.

The Balance Between Experiment and Accessibility

A key achievement on the album is straddling the line between bold innovation and broad accessibility. It is little coincidence that it has become her first work to crack the upper reaches of key markets: at its core a collection of truly catchy hits. A song performed entirely in English builds around a chorus that seems to collect increasingly nagging hooks while it spirals skyward. This trick gets repeated by another expansive ballad that expands and contracts, intertwining layered melodies like a complex weave.

  • A waltz-like song charms via its jaunty, Disney-adjacent flair and a chant-along chorus.
  • Lyrically, it aligns the pop culture impact of contemporary breakup anthems, eviscerating an ex- partner labeled an "emotional bully".
  • Throughout the album, the singing have a sharp smile, like a storybook character hiding a knife: "Top prize in acting like a motherfucker / You have the podium of disappointment."

A Maximalist Feast for the Ears

Lux is popular music on a maximalist level, a hungry reach for high Art amid of looming artificial sameness. It rejects solipsism in favor of sublime transcendence, creating a dramatic spectacle that skillfully controls its built-in ridiculousness. This is an abundant well of buried treasure that requires patience to fully mine but doesn't seem like a chore. Where other major releases of 2025 seemed like feasting on meal, Lux offers a sumptuous banquet where the guests at the table, some tipsy on sacred drink, flit from discussions about historical figures, the profound feeling of soul-shattering sadness, and common stories about useless partners. It is a modern-day theatrical production from pop's most endlessly creative practitioner.
