The Film 'Together' Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Romantic Bond.

Here's a test for long-term couples who are fans of the horror genre: Get comfortable with your partner and stream Together. This 2025 indie hit recently had its streaming debut on Hulu. On the surface, it might appear like conventional physical horror, but within Together lies a deep meditation about our choices in loving each other.

A Debut Feature Delving into Relationship Dynamics

Together marks the debut feature-length film for director Michael Shanks. It stars actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as Tim and Millie, an unmarried couple that have remained a couple for ten years. Married in actuality in 2017, the two stars bring a unique chemistry to their roles, skillfully embodying both the joys and frustrations of a enduring union.

The narrative starts when the couple relocate from the big city to the country for Millie’s job. A familiar story element, sure, but that’s largely where the tropes cease. Together evolves into as much a examination of mental states of the pair’s relationship as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

An Otherworldly Trigger

While hiking near their rural residence, a storm hits, and the protagonists tumble into an hole in the earth. After being trapped overnight there and finally finding a way out, a mysterious influence takes hold of the duo. This force creates a supernatural closeness between them that goes well past simple connection.

The whole movie is a slow burn horror experience, blending elements of dreamlike terrors, gross (but tastefully done) biological grotesqueries, and surprisingly comedic interactions (sometimes amidst something disturbing). Shanks weaves these elements together neatly and presents them in a consistently growing aura of dread.

Complex Characterizations

A large part of Together is only Brie and Franco, and they deftly portray countless layers to the characters’ relationship. Millie’s confidence and feeling of intimacy is suffering due to a lack of intimacy. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his reluctance to chase only his struggling artistic pursuits inexorably rises.

Tim, on the other hand feels trapped and cut off by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve left the city and removed from his network of friends. He dreads the idea of completely losing his personal autonomy in Millie. This fear is intensified by the fact he does not operate a vehicle and needs Millie for mobility.

The film's most intelligent aspect in Together refrains from painting Tim or Millie the clear bad guy.

The couple confront the type of challenges that are inherent in any relationship a decade in. At their core, they have affection for one another. They find humor with each other, offer support, and share intimately at times. But beneath it all, there’s an inescapable current of uncertainty about their bond.

Thematic Depth

While the paranormal elements in Together represent these fears of excessive reliance and totally devoting oneself to another person, the metaphor does not come across as overly obvious or heavy-handed. Instead, these visceral horror elements offer a brilliant analogue to the character-driven drama. Both the supernatural and the personal work together in a mutually beneficial way.

A Divisive Ending

Together’s final act, which remains unspoiled, has left audiences divided on the movie's final takeaway about enmeshed dynamics. Reports indicate that single viewers have seen the movie as a strong argument for remaining unattached. Meanwhile, certain partners experiencing tension found that the film ultimately assisted them make up.

Regardless of your relationship status, your own response could act as a great barometer of how you view relationships. Will the finale inspire a sense of discomfort and fear, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you see yourself in Tim or Millie and scream at your TV, or simply turn to your significant other and say, “We could get through that together”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an test you can embark on right now.

Together is currently playing on the streaming service Hulu as of this moment.
