The fast bowler Poised for a Significant Contribution in the Ashes

Pat Cummins bowling

The Australian skipper has secured over 300 dismissals in 71 Test matches with an average of 22.10.

The Australian chief selector George Bailey has declared that skipper Cummins will be a central figure in this winter's historic rivalry.

Speculation had been growing that the 32-year-old might be unavailable due to a persistent back stress problem that had not yet healed.

Initial reports from the squad suggested no official announcement had been made regarding his involvement, with the extended contest kicking off on 21 November in Western Australia.

Bailey expressed that his recovery is on track and was "optimistic" about the prospects of being involved.

"It's clear that time is getting short and various factors around that, not only the physical problem, but other factors as well," Bailey remarked.

"We're encouraged. There's strong faith that he'll participate in a significant role. Ideally from the opening match. If not, then we'll pick it up."

Injury History

The captain missed the white-ball matches against New Zealand and India in the previous weeks after examinations confirmed a lumbar bone stress.

There is a track record of recurring issues, with recurrences in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 causing him to miss several home seasons in four years.

He emphasized he would be proactive in his approach in his comeback strategy to secure his spot for the Ashes.

The selector indicated that there was no confirmation if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his rehabilitation but admitted it was "becoming urgent" for him to be fit for the initial match.

Backup Options

If he's unavailable, veteran batsman Smith will assume leadership.

Versatile player Green was withdrawn recently from the national team for their limited-overs matches against the Asian giants as a safety move because of an abdominal issue.

He labeled it as a "small issue and confirmed that he'll feature in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "well-prepared to resume bowling."

"Considerable effort has gone into developing the strategy for him to take part for the opening match as an dual-role player," Bailey explained.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the first two ODIs regardless. The way he swings the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, should it hinder progress for 24 more hours, we just made the decision to take a cautious route."
