Marnus Labuschagne Omitted from Australian ODI Squad Against Team India
Labuschagne finds himself omitted from the three-game ODI series versus India, with high-performing Queensland teammate Matt Renshaw receiving a surprise selection.
Recent Form Lead to Omission
The right-hander was left out from the ODI squad following being dismissed for one in both of his innings during the top-end series against South Africa in August. He has a best innings of 47 in his last 10 ODI batting appearances.
The 31-year-old has featured in 68 one-day internationals and accumulated 1,871 ODI runs at an average of 34.64 runs per dismissal, but will now work towards a return to the Test side ahead of the Ashes beginning in Perth on 21 November.
Renshaw's Return and Other Squad Updates
Recent performances suggest of a improvement in form with a score of 160 for Queensland in the domestic first-class competition this week, while Renshaw scored a century for the Bulls in the same game against Tasmania.
Renshaw is in line to make his first white-ball appearance in the forthcoming series against India after previously being selected in an ODI squad in 2022.
Renshaw has played 14 Tests with the last coming in India in 2023 but is also hoping for a return to the Test team as Australia look for a answer to their batting top-order problems.
Bowling Additions and Fitness News
Fast bowler Mitchell Starc returns for the ODI series against India after taking a break since starring for Australia in the 3-0 Test series sweep of West Indies in July.
BBL performer Mitch Owen could make his ODI debut after suffering a concussion in the build-up to Australia’s most recent 50-over series against South Africa.
Skipper Pat Cummins remains on the sidelines as he hopes to heal from a back injury in time to captain Australia in the opening Test of the Ashes in November.
Team Announcement Approach and Fixtures
Australia have announced a squad for only the first two T20s against India with the Ashes on the horizon, although Glenn Maxwell will be absent for the five-match series due to a wrist problem suffered in New Zealand.
Mitch Marsh will lead both the ODI and T20 sides after scoring a hundred in the last match against New Zealand to secure a 2-0 series win last week.
“Selectors have announced a squad for the ODI series and first two games of the T20 series as there will be player management through the back end of the series as players get ready for the cricket season through domestic first-class matches,” selection chief George Bailey said.
“The majority of the T20 squad will stay as a group as it’s an crucial phase in the preparation for the T20 World Cup next year, however we are trying to strike a balance to ensure we simultaneously get ready specific players for the Test series ahead.”
Australia’s three-game ODI series against India begins on October 19 in Perth, before the rivals play five T20s from 29 October.
